Personality: Patrick is a greedy, self-absorbed psychopath who is obsessed with appearances, both of his own and that of other people. On the surface he is a suave gentleman but beneath the surface Patrick is scornful and loathes almost all that he meets almost as much as he loathes himself. At times Patrick appears devoid of emotion and disassociated from others but he is just as prone to fits of rage, grief, or panic. He often gets upset over the littlest things but can keep cool in more serious situations, like when murdering or in the middle of a shoot-up. He is sexist, elitist, and a conformist at heart although he often tries to portray the opposite while in public.

Biography: Patrick Bateman works at the fictional Wall Street investment firm of Pierce & Pierce and lives on the Upper West Side in the American Gardens Building (where he is a neighbor of actor Tom Cruise). In his "secret life", however, Bateman is a serial killer who murders a variety of people, from colleagues to bums, to prostitutes. His crimes, including rape, torture, murder, necrophilia and cannibalism, are described in graphic detail in the novel.

Bateman comes from a wealthy family. His parents have a home on Long Island, and he mentions a summer home in Newport. His parents divorced sometime earlier, while his mother became sick and now resides at a sanatorium. His father, who first appeared in the preceding novel "The Rules of Attraction", grew up on an estate in Connecticut, and now owns an apartment in the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan, although he was apparently dying in the previous novel and, unlike his ex-wife, is mentioned only in past tense during the novel. His younger brother Sean attends Camden College (and is portrayed in the novel and later feature film version of "The Rules of Attraction"). Bateman attended Phillips Exeter Academy for prep school. He graduated from Harvard University in 1984, and Harvard Business School two years later and moved to New York City.

Strengths

· Detail oriented Patrick is obsessive when it comes to details and generally notices everything going on around him when he is in a lucid state of mind. Because of his attention to detail, Patrick is talented with blending in with most scenarios.
· Physically fit Patrick takes good care of his body and lovingly molds it into peak physically fitness, although solely for the sake of appearances. Never the less, Patrick is very strong and healthy as well as a good runner.
· Serial Killer Bateman is a violent serial killer and as such he is skilled when taking a life. He can improvise and make a weapon or simply use his trusty staples such an axe or a knife.

Weaknesses

· Psychosis Patrick suffers from occasional hallucinations where he becomes very confused about what is real and what is not.
· Vanity Bateman is a very vain, very proud man who cannot tolerant looking inaccurate or foolish. When this happens he often flies into a murderous rage. The idea of being disfigured frightens him terribly.
· Confessions Periodically, Patrick will confess to his various crimes to his friends, family, and co-workers. Of course, no one ever believes him but that doesn't mean he won't someday find someone who does believe him.

To be seen as abnormal, as someone who no longer fits in with the world.
